Days of Reckoning

The underground royal commission report's ambitious investigation of how our tax dollars are spent takes us across the country, from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island. For the first time, a group of citizens were asking the questions - of politicians and bureaucrats, academics and policy experts, farmers and small business owners. "Days of Reckoning looks at how Canada amassed an enormous debt, while "Secrets in High Places" examines how government decisions are made.

In "Days of Reckoning", seven young researchers set out on a cross-country journey that would profoundly change their view of government. Their goal: to discover why their generation had been saddled with a crippling $580 million debt from those responsible for managing this once prosperous country. The young researchers conclude their journey by taking the government of Canada to court in a mock trial with real lawyers in front of a respected judge in an attempt to hold the government accountable for its actions.

Companion Books (click on cover for details):

The companion books contain detailed interviews with politicians, civil servants, and Canadians form all walks of life detailing their evidence of government policy and programs that were plagued by chronic mismanagement, overspending, unaccountable practices and a lack of long-term vision and the consequences for future generations.

Secrets in High Places
"Secrets in High Places" further investigates government spending in a 2-hour documentary that examines the Canada Infrastructure Works Program, a government initiative that promised to repair the country's crumbling infrastructure and create jobs. The results reveal the alarming truth about the nature of government spending in Canada: it is a shamefully unaccountable system, where those responsible for the public purse are often concealed behind a wall of bureaucracy, creating a veil of secrecy which alienates the ordinary citizen.

The accompanying books document the investigation through the eyes of the researchers and through transcripts of interviews with politicians and civil servants at all three levels of government in six provinces.
